Joint Session

From Saving the Planet to Saving the Universe: Challenges to Environmental Law posed by the Growth of Air and Space activities

Joint Committee Session by:

  • Aviation and Aerospace Committee
  • Environmental Law Committee

Session Synopsis:

This session intends to bring attention to the fact that environmental concerns are focused on mainly activities performed within the surface Planet Earth, and how these may affect its land, oceans and sky, but an exponential growth on air and space activities may require to broaden the scope of such traditional focus. Considering the international nature of activities performing in air space, a review of environmental legislation in different jurisdictions and the international treaties on Space Law, together with a practical view on the developments of the activities to be carried out in the outer space, will help us understand the need to introduce space issues as a concern within the reach of Environmental Law.
